Lentils and IBS: Fiber and Fermentation in a Dense Package
Lentils are nutritious but can flare IBS through fermentable carbs and high fiber load. Tolerance often depends on variety, preparation, and portion size rather than a universal yes/no rule.
Why Lentils Can Be Tough on IBS
- Fermentable carbohydrates can increase gas and distension
- Large fiber jumps can worsen cramping in sensitive phases
- Portion size is easy to overshoot in soups and stews
How to Test
Remove lentils for 3-4 weeks, then test a very small serving of well-cooked lentils in a plain meal. Track symptoms over 24-72 hours and compare split red lentils versus whole lentils in separate challenges.
