Nightshades and Eczema: Helpful Elimination or Unnecessary Restriction?
Nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes) are a common discussion point in eczema communities, but response is individual. Some people notice clearer skin during a trial; others see no change.
Why They Are Suspected
- Nightshades appear often in high-trigger meals (pizza, spicy sauces, fried foods)
- Tomato-heavy foods can overlap with histamine and acid sensitivity patterns
- Multiple exposures in one day can make one ingredient look worse than it is
How to Test
Run a 2-3 week elimination of all major nightshades, then reintroduce one at a time (for example tomato, then potato) while tracking delayed flare severity over 24-72 hours.
